I'm thinking of starting a new freshwater tank. Recently I've been researching ways to minimize fish deaths related to 'new tank syndrome,' where the toxin levels in the water become too high before essential bacterias have been seeded well enough to offset said toxins. A friend who used to run a fish store suggested I find a friend, family member, or even a fish store with well set-up aquariums and then 'borrow' a used filter, which I should then 'dump' into my aquarium. The bacteria in the used filter from the well-seeded aquarium then sets up house in my aquarium (theoretically).
Anyone actually done this???
